Gaston Frydlewski & Mariquel Waingarten

In college, Gaston Frydlewski came to terms with his dislike for traditional shoelaces. In question were the loose hold, tripping and tying, and messy design of traditional shoelaces favored by the footwear industry. Gaston set about to find an alternative solution, but there was none. And so it is from this realization that the idea for HICKIES® came to be. The resulting product capitalized on the market need for a shoe fastening solution that was at once functional, looked good and allowed its users to perform without interruption. In 2004, he filed HICKIES’ first patent, drafting the patent himself.

Mariquel Waingarten, founder of The Tailor Made Hotel in Argentina, leveraged viral marketing techniques to build a strong reputation, pioneering a new industry norm, ranking the hotel #1 on TripAdvisor for four consecutive years, until she sold the hotel in 2010. After years of working on the shoelace alternative as a side project, Gaston and Mariquel joined forces, sold everything and moved to Brooklyn in pursuit of the future of HICKIES. With prototypes built, the duo then launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to see if there was a true demand for a shoelace alternative. To their delight, the HICKIES campaign raised 6x their production goal and secured Brookstone, their first major retail chain, in just 45 days.
