1934 $ 20 Federal Reserve Richmond MULE # 787

Being offered today is a rare example of a 1934 MULE $ 20.00 Federal Reserve note. The note is in Choice Uncirculated condition. The MULE designation makes the note harder to find and more collectible.

This note is from the Richmond Series, which is designated by the “E” on the left side of the note. (see pics).

A MULE note has different size plate numbers on the front and back.

During the transition to of plates both large and small size plate were in use. Usually these different plates were side-by-side on the same press. This occurred because the BEP had a standard economic policy of using up obsolete plates rather than scrapping them. Whenever micro faces are paired with macro backs, or macro faces are paired with micro backs, a mule is produced.
